In 2007 artist Guido van der Werve stood almost immobile for 24 hours on the axis of the world in the geographic North pole. He only imperceptibly moved in a clockwise fashion, as the earth turned counterclockwise beneath him.
The performance “Nummer negen: The day I didn’t turn with the world“, has been documented through a time-lapse series of photographs, showing the day the artist let the Earth rotate around him.
Refusing to follow the natural rotation of the Earth, the artist staged a land-art modern-day version of David vs. Goliath. His beautiful conceptual challenge, accomplished through an almost unbereable effort, echoes the foolish gestures typical of Werner Herzog’s movies characters.
