Sylvia Matas is an artist based in Winnipeg, Canada who uses the medium of drawings, videos and text to explore “psychological landscapes, natural phenomena and individual experience“.
In Every Direction, her first book containing 45 drawings, photographs and texts, is an investigation of our place in an expanding universe though visual analysis of movement. As stated by the artist: “Everything is moving away from me at an exponential rate, infinitely, in every direction, from every centre point. So my book moves back and forth between the micro and the macro and where we sit in that spectrum.”
Many drawings included in the book are diagrams of wind movements, a cartography of arrows indicating rhtythm, direction and velocity of wind. Sound and noise charts accompany this visual essay on information and in-and-out of focus perception without narrative that describes “overlapping mental and physical environments“.
