Japanese photographer Masao Yamamoto produces series of small pictures, highly contrasted and desaturated. The subjects are natural settings, animals or little objects enhanced by strong compositions and by the opposition of a black or yellowish background with a highly detailed silhouette popping out of it.
Eerie moments of a suspended reality lie silently in the space of a postcard, in a well defined visual environment with geometrical features clearly underlined. The images are treated in order to communicate a sense of wonder combined with nostalgia, like fragments of memories. In his exhibitions or in the layout of his books, Yamamoto juxtaposes the images so as to let them suddenly appear as different moments of the same world.
