Among several seminal works in his career, German graphic designer Otl Aicher designed a series of posters to promote the Allgäu region in Germany, not far from the location of his last studio. This 1981 work is an exploration of the possibilities of expression of the pictogram, an extremely synthetic graphic system. This series links the typographical research in Aicher’s work with his production of images.
Allgäu pictures come each in a bold black and white and are printed out in the A1 format. The landscape features of the region, as well as some fragments of towns, animals and even interiors are synthesized in order to become small sequences of lines, textures and patterns. The resulting drawings are a sort of illustrated snapshots of the described territories: although they are superficially simple and straightforward, they are also evocative and rich with small narrative features.
