“How Do We Represent Something That We Never Look At?” Drawings by Martinet et Texereau

November 23, 2015 by Mariabruna Fabrizi Leave a Comment

Pauline Martinet and Zoé Texereau are two French artists who work together producing common drawings with a shared aesthetics. They provided themselves with a set of rules in order to make their presence disappear behind each image. The rules include the control of any instinct in the production of the pictures: each trait is carefully decided in advance, the drawing prepared and composed and in the end the production becoming a sheer executive task while the authorship belongs to both equally.

The artists choose subjects taken from the observation of the everyday and the mundane and question themselves on how the notion of exotism is deeply connected to that of the ordinary. The black and white pencil drawings on paper are collections of situations that are, in the words of the artists, usually overlooked: detached houses in the French suburbs, swimming pools in residential gardens, hotels and palms, common interiors of unexceptional houses.

Works by Marinet and Texereau are currently on show at the Nery Marino Gallery in Paris.
