12th Isle is a music label founded in 2016 by a collective from Glasgow that has released excellent ambient electronic albums in the last few years, such as XYR’s Eldorado or Christos Chondropoulos’s Athenian Primitivism, the album that let us know them.
Al White is the graphic designer and illustrator behind 12th Isle’s visual identity and the general artwork of every release, shows posters and merchandising. His style for the albums covers selected below is easily recognizable, as it consists of two-tone depictions of alien territories, other world’s cartographies, sci-fi movies storyboards and organic shapes. His work may look to us as an Artificial Intelligence trying to produce pseudo-realistic visual reports of an extra-terrestrial landscape, if the data came from Jeff VanderMeer’s Annihilation, Ettore Sottsass Jr’ The Planet as a Festival, Japan robot anime, and Codex Seraphinianus.
12th Isle is an imagined island region – each record cover roughly depicts an individual zone or habitat of the landscape – some of those zones might be microscopic whereas others might spans several miles, be underwater, etc. The music sets the foundations for each zone, but it’s all part of the same world and has to make sense to me within the bigger environment.
