“Per un nuovo rapporto tra l’utente ed il suo spazio” (“For a new relation between the user and his space”) and “Arti visive e spazio di coinvolgimento” (“Visual Arts and Space of Involvement ) are the two introductions, the former by Leonardo Savioli and the latter by Adolfo Natalini, of an exhibition of students works from the annual studio of Interior Design of Leonardo Savioli at the Faculty of Architecture in Florence in 1966.
The studio, whose theme was the design of “A leisure and spectacle space” (a club/discotheque), became a seminal step for the formation of the radical architecture movement in Italy and in later years included the same Deganello (Archizoom) and Natalini (Superstudio) among others, as tutors.
The students were invited to study the last iterations of Contemporary Art such as the movements of Programmed, Op and Pop Art, and to follow conferences of Sacripanti and of the designers of built clubs such as the Pipers in Rome.
As explained by Natalini in his text:
“Throughout the studio, were identified several “methods of composition” that architecture could take from the visual arts: the problem was to use them in a creative way and not just ironically or demystifyingly.
Disorientation, transposition of scale, assembly, installation, breakdown, repetition and iteration, contamination, are terms that have been used continuously, and above all they were the stimulants giving the project the trigger needed to swith from a subject of study or professional routine into a creative and active action.”
The students’ project show Archizoom and Superstudio early interest in Cedric Price and Archigram visions through their critical use of images : “A pop attitude to join the world of images in which we are immersed translates into a creative process based on freedom of choice and on the critical inclination towards the last production of the society.
