New Media artist Liliana Farber investigates the ways in which the virtual redefines the physical world. Using custom-made software and collected material from the Internet, she creates images, installations and interactive works. These are the product of research-based processes and condense information into data visualisations.
Liliana Farber’s works revolve about the possibility of mapping the space in-between online and offline worlds where human and algorithm share their space of existence. New media become portals to materialise traces of the past, chaotic information and emotional inputs.
In Terram in Aspectu, a series of phantom islands (bodies of land featured, sometimes for centuries, on maps, but proven not to exist) were recreated as satellite photography through a machine learning algorithm trained with images from Google Earth.
