“The Formal Generators of Structure” is a sequence of drawings which explore orthogonal forms. The research starts from the square and the cross, two forms which are considered as the basis of a large part of plans and structures which have been historically developed by man.
The long sequence of drawings stresses the basic forms extruding, combining, multiplying and mirroring them in order to analyze several properties they have. Axial properties, optical qualities, volumetric implications of planar extension are explored through the production of drawings which start from the basic geometrical form and then introduce references to architectural elements, being them columns, pillars, walls.
In addition to the square and the cross, the authors considered other formal structures connected to the first two, the rectangle, the pinwheel, the linked figure and the lozenge.
