Chris Marker’s Junkopia

August 29, 2012 by Fosco Lucarelli 1 Comment

Passed away the last month, Chris Marker will be mostly remembered for his 1962 film La Jetée, a post-apocalyptic tale of time travels constructed almost entirely from still photos, and for the 1983 Sans Soleil, a meditation on the nature of human memory.

Not many know of his sparse minor works, oddities such as the 1981 “Junkopia”, the wordless short movie we present here.
Turned near San Francisco in 1981 during the takes of Sans Soleil, Junkopia, according to the folks of Criterion, shows “meditative, eerie images (that) reappropriate pieces of detritus, turning them into objects of strange beauty.”
