CALL FOR STUDENT CONTRIBUTORS FOR ‘THE SUPREME ACHIEVEMENT’
Workshop at CAMPO (www.campo.space), Rome, September 5 to September 12.
Apply until July 10 at info@black-square.eu.
The Supreme Achievement is the title of an impressive initiative by CAMPO and Black Square Press. The project asks twelve architects and emerging practices to employ the format of the Twelve Ideal Cities by radical architecture office Superstudio in order to put forward their critical understanding of contemporary city.
The original Superstudio work, (the curators explain in the brief), “was less about imagining the Future than it was about re-imagining Architecture as a form of knowledge and as a platform for thinking rather than mere practice“. This critical tradition is a tool that can be reused as a powerful commentary (although not necessarily within the same dystopian attitude) of contemporary condition, beyond the optimistic and pragmatic model that as architects we are usually asked to observe.
The twelve proposals by the architects will be, in a second phase, reinterpreted by a a group of selected architecture students in a one-week workshop in order to develop, for each of the cities, a prototype of the space of the self in a 1:20 plaster model. The material will be included in a publication and in an upcoming exhibition featured in the Campo gallery in the fall 2015.
From the workshop’s brief:
The workshop will be lead by chief curators Davide Sacconi (Syracuse University) and Maria S. Giudici (Architectural Association) in collaboration with CAMPO’s Luca Garofalo (Ian +), Matteo Costanzo and Gianfranco Bombaci (2A+P/A). Participants will be assigned one of the 12 new ‘Ideal’ cities to further develop at the scale of human inhabitation and will therefore start working on the basis of one of the proposals put forward by the architect contributors. Some of the architect contributors will take part in crits during the workshop; we will find opportunities for debate and discussion with the others either at a later date or via web.
As one of the selected practices (as Microcities), we’re honoured to be included by chief curators Davide Sacconi (Syracuse University) and Maria S. Giudici (Architectural Association) in a list of architects that we profoundly admire and that (some of them) we have repeatedly featured in these pages. Among the confirmed participants there are (in no particular order): Amid/Cero9, Dogma, Microcities, Behemoth, MapOffice, Didier Fiuza Faustino, Philippe Morel, Aristide Antonas, Miniatura, For-a, Beth Hughes and Alex Maymind.
As we are also very supportive of the pedagogical attention of such an initiative, we are willing to share here the call for students contributions, and link here the original brief of ‘The Supreme Achievement‘.
If you feel you are an individual with a strong personal take on space and the city, be hurry and apply until July 10 at info@black-square.eu, by sending a pdf document containing a cv, brief motivation letter, and 3 images of your work.
